Today, 29 years have passed since a fire of dubious origin broke out in Chiado, one of the most emblematic areas of Lisbon. The fire broke out in the warehouses of the Grandella, in Rua do Carmo, destroyed 18 buildings and an area equivalent to almost eight hectares.

Consumed buildings in the streets of Carmo, Nova do Almada, Garrett, Crucifix, Gold and Calçada do Sacramento.

The Chiado was rebuilt with a requalification plan of the prestigious architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.

Situated in the heart of the city, it reconquered the cosmopolitan and glamorous aura of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, national and international fashion plan.

At the official ceremony held today a commemorative plaque was unveiled at Rua do Carmo, followed by the performance of the band of the regiment sapadores.

Books, exhibitions and a simulacrum recall one of the greatest catastrophes in the Portuguese capital. It was 29 years ago that the Chiado burned and still does not know why.

There are affinities between Fado and Flamenco and even festivals that bring together these two musical genres, and Flamenco is also expressed by the beauty of dance and costumes. There are traces common in these identities, the tragic sense is one of them.

For example, the festival BADASOM, which has already passed names of the current Fado (Ana Moura, Dulce Pontes and Cuca Rosetta, for example). They cross their voices with those of Flamenco (Niña Pastori was one of them).

Like Fado, people from outside, from other cultures, fall in love and surrender to Flamenco. Ukrainian dancer Olga Sharapa (pictured) is a good example of this delivery.
